Train Ticket Price in Pakistan | Pakistan Railways Fare List, Timings & Online Booking
The Pakistan train ticket price starts at about Rs 370 for a local economy seat from Karachi to Hyderabad and reaches Rs 18,250 for an AC Sleeper on Jaffar Express from Quetta to Peshawar. Around 30 named trains cover the main routes, from four-hour railcar hops between Lahore and Rawalpindi to the 35-hour run across four provinces. Fares were last revised on 9 March 2026, and tickets can be booked up to 90 days ahead on the RABTA app.
Short answer: A Pakistan Railways economy ticket from Karachi to Lahore costs Rs 3,750 on Khyber Mail, Fareed Express or Awam Express, and Rs 5,600 on Green Line. AC Standard on the same route runs Rs 7,600 to Rs 9,900, AC Business Rs 10,950 to Rs 14,600, and an AC Sleeper berth Rs 14,050 to Rs 14,850. Shorter sectors are far cheaper: Lahore to Faisalabad from Rs 580, Karachi to Hyderabad from Rs 370, Lahore to Rawalpindi from Rs 1,100. Fares are fixed by distance and class rather than by demand, so booking late costs you the seat, not extra money. Compare against flight fares before you decide on long routes.
What is different about travelling by train in 2026
Four developments this year change which train you book, who you are actually buying from, and how much faith to put in the timetable.
Fares rose in March
- What happened
- The government raised petrol and high-speed diesel by Rs 55 a litre in March, taking diesel to about Rs 336 a litre ex-depot.
- Now
- Pakistan Railways lifted economy fares 5 percent and every AC class 10 percent from 9 March 2026, with freight up 20 percent. Those fares are still in force.
- For you
- The gap between economy and AC has widened. On long routes economy is now less than a third of the AC Business price.
Private operators are taking over trains
- What happened
- In June 2026 Pakistan Railways handed the commercial management of five passenger trains to private partners in a Rs 10.75 billion deal: Awam Express, Millat Express, Karakoram Express, Mianwali Express and Narowal Passenger.
- Now
- Millat Express moves to private management from 1 October 2026 on the Lala Musa to Karachi route, and Karakoram Express from 8 October. Eleven more trains are in the pipeline.
- For you
- Booking for an outsourced train may move off the government counter. Check where the booking for your specific train is being handled before you queue.
Balochistan services are unreliable
- What happened
- Bolan Mail, the only Karachi to Quetta train, was suspended indefinitely in March 2026. Jaffar Express has been halted repeatedly through the year for security and for track work.
- Now
- Jaffar Express is the single train linking Quetta with the rest of the network, and it is stopped at short notice, often turned back at Jacobabad. It was suspended again on 5 and 6 September for track repairs.
- For you
- Do not plan a connection or a deadline around a Quetta train. Confirm on the morning of travel.
Track work and restored routes
- What happened
- The ADB-backed Karachi to Rohri phase of ML-1 is financed at about $2.5 billion with civil work targeted for January 2027. China declined to fund the whole of ML-1, so the Rohri to Multan section is being offered to private investors.
- Now
- Suspended services are coming back in phases. Babu Passenger returned to Lahore to Lala Musa on 20 August 2026, Mohenjo Daro Passenger on 15 September, and a Sialkot to Rawalpindi service is due on 15 October.
- For you
- Small-town stations that lost their train are worth rechecking. Journey times on the main line will not improve until ML-1 work is well advanced.
Karakoram Express is not running via Faisalabad
Until the Faisalabad section of its route is restored, Karakoram Express is being routed through Sahiwal. If you were planning to board or alight at Faisalabad, Chak Jhumra or Sangla Hill on this train, check the current stopping pattern rather than an older timetable. Shalimar Express and Badar Express still serve the Lahore to Faisalabad corridor.
Pakistan Railways classes explained
Every fare on this page is quoted by class. The class decides the price far more than the train does, so it is worth knowing what each one actually gives you before comparing numbers.
Economy Seat
Fan cooledBasic padded seating in fan-cooled coaches, three and three or two and three depending on the rake. The cheapest way to travel any distance in Pakistan.
- No air conditioning
- Fills first on holidays
- Available on almost every train
Economy Berth
SleepingThe same coach standard with a berth instead of a seat, sold on overnight services. Usually only Rs 50 to Rs 100 more than the seat, which makes it the best value on the network.
- Roughly Rs 100 above the seat fare
- Overnight trains only
- Book early, small allocation
AC Standard
Air conditionedAir-conditioned seating with more room than economy. The usual choice for daytime travel in summer and the most widely available AC class.
- Roughly twice the economy fare
- Seats, not berths
- On most express trains
AC Business
Premium seatingWider reclining seats, fewer passengers per coach and meal service on the better trains. Priced close to three times economy on long routes.
- Best comfort per rupee on daytime runs
- Not offered on every train
- Green Line has the highest standard
AC Sleeper
BerthsAir-conditioned sleeping berths, the top of the range on Tezgam, Khyber Mail and Karachi Express. The only class on which a Karachi to Rawalpindi run is genuinely restful.
- Long overnight routes only
- Sells out weeks ahead in season
- Rs 14,000 upwards Karachi to Lahore
Parlour Car
Green Line onlyIndividual seating pods on Green Line. Sold as a seat rather than a berth, and priced below AC Business on the same train.
- Green Line exclusive
- Seat, not a berth
- Limited number per service
Class names vary slightly between trains and older rakes. AC Lower and AC Parlour appear on some timetables; they sit between AC Standard and AC Business in price.
Karachi to Lahore train ticket price by train
Eleven services work this corridor and the fare gap between the cheapest and the most expensive economy seat is Rs 1,850. Journey times run from about 18 hours to more than 26.
| Train | Economy seat | Economy berth | AC Standard | AC Business | AC Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khyber Mail | Rs 3,750 | Rs 3,850 | Rs 7,600 | Rs 10,950 | Rs 14,050 |

| Green Line | Rs 5,600 | Rs 5,700 | Not offered | Rs 14,600 | Rs 13,200 parlour |
Fares in force since 9 March 2026. Pakistan Railways sets one price per class per sector, so the figure does not change with how early you book. Confirm at the counter or in RABTA before paying.
Why the cheap trains cost half as much
Khyber Mail, Fareed Express, Allama Iqbal Express and Awam Express are older rakes with more stops, so the same journey takes several hours longer. Fareed Express stops at 46 stations and averages close to 27 hours. Tezgam, Karachi Express and Karakoram Express stop less often, and Green Line stops fewer than ten times between Karachi and Islamabad. You are paying for the stops you skip, not for the distance.
The berth is the best value on the network
An economy berth on Karachi to Lahore costs Rs 3,850 against Rs 3,750 for the seat. A hundred rupees converts a seated overnight journey into a horizontal one. The allocation per train is small and it goes early, which is the one case where booking weeks ahead genuinely changes your trip.
Green Line is a different product
Green Line runs Karachi Cantt to Islamabad Margalla in about 22 hours, with economy at Rs 5,600 to Lahore and Rs 6,350 to Rawalpindi. Its AC Business fare of Rs 14,600 to Lahore is the highest on the corridor, and the parlour car sits just below it. If the difference between 18 and 22 hours does not matter to you, the older trains save a great deal of money.
Karachi to Rawalpindi and Islamabad
| Train | Economy seat | Economy berth | AC Standard | AC Business | AC Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pakistan Express | Rs 4,200 | Rs 4,300 | Rs 10,250 | Not offered | Not offered |
| Hazara Express | Rs 4,200 | Rs 4,300 | Rs 10,450 | Not offered | Not offered |
| Khyber Mail | Rs 4,200 | Rs 4,300 | Not offered | Rs 12,300 | Rs 16,550 |

| Green Line | Rs 6,350 | Rs 6,450 | Rs 12,250 | Rs 15,350 | Rs 13,800 parlour |
Green Line continues past Rawalpindi to Islamabad Margalla; the Margalla fare is a little higher than the Rawalpindi one. There is no separate Islamabad main station, so every Islamabad train is in practice a Rawalpindi train.
Lahore train ticket price by route
The Lahore to Rawalpindi corridor is the busiest short-distance rail market in the country and the one place where the train reliably beats the road on time as well as price.
| Train | Economy seat | AC Standard | AC Business | AC Sleeper or parlour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rawal Express | Rs 1,100 | Rs 1,950 | Rs 2,150 | Rs 2,400 parlour |

The railcar services — Subak Raftar, Subak Kharram, Rawal Express and Islamabad Express — share one fare table and are the ones to look at first on this route.

Lahore to Faisalabad is the cheapest useful journey in Punjab
Badar Express and Ghouri Express carry economy-only rakes over the 142 kilometres for Rs 580, taking about two and a half hours through Qila Sheikhupura, Safdarabad, Sangla Hill and Chak Jhumra. Shalimar Express costs Rs 730 in economy and Rs 1,710 in AC Standard. Nothing on the road comes close on price.
Punjab’s regional network is being rebuilt
The Punjab government signed an agreement with the Ministry of Railways in April 2026 to supply modern DMU trainsets for eight regional routes covering about 1,415 kilometres, including Shahdara to Narowal and Narowal to Sialkot, Raiwind to Kasur, Pakpattan and Lodhran, Sheikhupura to Jaranwala and Shorkot, Lala Musa to Malakwal and Sargodha, and Kot Addu to Dera Ghazi Khan and Kashmore. The headline promise is a Lahore to Rawalpindi run in two and a half hours. Treat the timetable as announced rather than running until the stock arrives.
Karachi, Quetta and Peshawar train fares
Short Sindh sectors are the cheapest tickets Pakistan Railways sells. Balochistan is the opposite: one train, low fares and an unreliable service.
| Route | Trains | Economy | AC Standard | AC Business | 2026 status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Karachi to Hyderabad | Mehran, Shah Latif, and most main-line expresses | Rs 370 to 1,800 | Rs 1,350 to 2,700 | Limited | Frequent, many daily |

Status as of September 2026. Balochistan services change at very short notice; confirm with the station before you travel.
Quetta has one train, and it stops often
Bolan Mail, the Karachi to Quetta service, was suspended indefinitely in March 2026 and has not returned to a settled schedule. That leaves Jaffar Express, which runs Quetta to Peshawar over 1,632 kilometres and 37 stops in about 35 hours, as the only rail link between Balochistan and the rest of the country. It has been suspended for security several times this year and, on 5 and 6 September, for track maintenance, with the Peshawar-bound service turned back at Jacobabad. When it is stopped there is no rail alternative at all.
Sindh short sectors cost less than a rickshaw ride
Karachi to Hyderabad is Rs 370 on Mehran Express or Shah Latif Express, Rs 750 on most main-line expresses and Rs 1,800 on Green Line. The 1,500 rupee spread across the same 160-odd kilometres is entirely about which train you board, not about comfort on a journey of this length.
Major trains in Pakistan
Roughly thirty named express services work the network. These are the ones most travellers will actually be choosing between.
Green Line Express

From Rs 1,100Outsourcing: what it means for your ticket
In June 2026 Pakistan Railways handed commercial management of five trains to private partners for about Rs 10.75 billion, and eleven more are being tendered, among them Hazara Express, Bahauddin Zakaria Express, Rawal Express, Badar Express, Ghouri Express, Ravi Express, Thall Express and Mohenjo Daro Passenger. The track, the signalling and the crew remain with Pakistan Railways. What changes is who sells you the seat, who staffs the coach and who you complain to. Fares remain set on the Pakistan Railways scale.
How to book a train ticket in Pakistan
There are four ways to buy, and for popular trains the choice affects whether you get a seat at all.
RABTA app and website
- What it is
- Railway Automated Booking and Travel Assistance, the official Pakistan Railways e-ticketing platform, available as an app and online.
- How
- Create an account, pick your stations, date, train and class, enter passenger details and pay by card or mobile wallet. Cancellations are handled in the app.
- Watch for
- Cheap classes show as available and then sell out at the payment step. Complete the booking in one sitting.
Station booking counter
- What it is
- The reservation office at any major station.
- How
- Take your original CNIC. Tickets are issued against the identity document and are not transferable.
- Watch for
- For an outsourced train, the private operator may have its own counter. Ask which window handles your train.
Authorised agents
- What it is
- Travel agents licensed to issue Pakistan Railways tickets.
- How
- Useful if you are booking for someone else or cannot reach a station.
- Watch for
- A service fee applies. Avoid anyone selling through WhatsApp links or unofficial sites.
On the day
- What it is
- Unreserved economy on passenger trains and any unsold seats on expresses.
- How
- Buy at the counter before boarding. Arrive at least 20 minutes early to find your platform and coach.
- Watch for
- On long-distance expresses, same-day economy is usually standing room at best.
Concessions and refunds
Students with a valid institutional card receive a concession on most classes, and children between five and eleven travel at half fare. Senior citizens and people with disabilities are also eligible for reduced fares. Concessions are applied at the counter rather than in the app on most sectors, so if you are entitled to one it is worth queueing. Refunds on cancelled bookings carry a deduction that varies with how close to departure you cancel; when Pakistan Railways cancels a service, as happens regularly in Balochistan, fares are refunded in full.
Keep the helpline handy
Pakistan Railways runs a toll-free helpline on 117 for schedule and running-status queries. Live tracking apps show actual positions and delays, which on the main line in winter fog is more useful than the timetable.
When to book for the best seat
Rail fares in Pakistan are fixed by class and distance. Booking early does not save money, but it decides whether you get a berth, an AC seat or nothing at all.
90 days out
Booking opensSeats and berths can be reserved up to three months ahead.
Two to four weeks
Berths still openThe sensible window for an AC Sleeper or an economy berth.
Three to seven days
AC fillingEconomy seats usually fine, AC classes thinning out.
Eid and holidays
Four to six weeksEid, summer holidays and long weekends sell out completely.
Three things worth more than a booking trick
Book the berth rather than the seat on any overnight journey; the difference is about a hundred rupees in economy. Check whether your train has been outsourced before you look for the booking window, because government counters stop selling once a handover date is set. And on long routes, price the cheaper slow train against the fast one honestly: Karachi to Lahore on Fareed Express costs Rs 3,750 and takes nearly 27 hours, while Green Line costs Rs 5,600 and takes about 18. Whether those nine hours are worth Rs 1,850 depends entirely on what waits at the other end.
The cheapest way from Karachi to Lahore
The same journey, three ways, at September 2026 prices.
Train
Rs 3,750Economy seat, from
Fixed fares, a berth for a hundred rupees more, luggage carried without a separate charge and room to walk about. The trade is time and punctuality.
Best for cost, luggage and overnight travel.
Bus
Rs 5,000 to 9,000Indicative, by operator and class
More departures than the train and door-to-door terminals in more places, but no way to lie down and a motorway journey that is long by any standard.
Best when the timing suits you better than the train.
Flight
Rs 19,000 to 35,000One way economy
Five times the economy train fare at the low end and ten times at the high end, before you add airport transfers at both ends.
Best only when the day matters more than the money.
On this corridor the train is not merely cheaper, it is cheaper by a factor that changes what the journey is for. An AC Sleeper berth at Rs 14,050 still undercuts the cheapest Karachi to Lahore flight, and it saves a night’s accommodation. Where the train loses is on shorter sectors with good air links, and on any route where arriving on a particular morning is not negotiable.
Main railway stations in Pakistan
Several large cities have more than one station, and boarding at the wrong one is the commonest mistake on the network.

- Note
- Most expresses use Cantt. Fareed Express uses City. Check your ticket.
Lahore
- Stations
- Lahore Junction, with Kot Lakhpat and Shahdara Bagh on the outskirts.
- Note
- Junction handles essentially all long-distance services.

Train ticket price FAQs
How much is a Karachi to Lahore train ticket in 2026?
Economy costs Rs 3,750 on Khyber Mail, Fareed Express, Allama Iqbal Express and Awam Express, Rs 4,900 on Tezgam, Karachi Express and Karakoram Express, and Rs 5,600 on Green Line. AC Standard runs Rs 7,600 to Rs 9,900, AC Business Rs 10,950 to Rs 14,600, and an AC Sleeper berth Rs 14,050 to Rs 14,850.
When did Pakistan Railways last increase fares?
On 9 March 2026. Economy class went up 5 percent and all air-conditioned classes went up 10 percent, with freight charges up 20 percent, after the government raised petrol and diesel prices by Rs 55 a litre. Tickets booked before the change were honoured at the old fare.
What is the cheapest train ticket in Pakistan?
Short sectors on passenger trains. Karachi to Hyderabad is Rs 370 on Mehran Express or Shah Latif Express. Lahore to Faisalabad is Rs 580 on Badar Express or Ghouri Express. On long routes, the cheapest economy fare Karachi to Lahore is Rs 3,750.
How far in advance can I book a train ticket?
Up to 90 days before departure. Because fares are fixed rather than demand-based, booking early does not lower the price, but it is the only way to secure an economy berth or an AC Sleeper, which sell out well ahead in Eid and holiday weeks.
How do I book Pakistan Railways tickets online?
Through RABTA, the official Pakistan Railways booking app and website. Create an account, select your stations, date, train and class, enter passenger details and pay by card or mobile wallet. Carry the identity document used for the booking, since tickets are issued against a CNIC and are not transferable.
Which trains have been handed to private operators?
Awam Express, Millat Express, Karakoram Express, Mianwali Express and Narowal Passenger were outsourced in June 2026 for about Rs 10.75 billion. Millat Express passes to private management on 1 October 2026 and Karakoram Express on 8 October. Eleven further trains are being tendered. The fares remain on the Pakistan Railways scale.
Is the Karachi to Quetta train running?
Bolan Mail, the only Karachi to Quetta service, was suspended indefinitely in March 2026. Jaffar Express, which runs Quetta to Peshawar, is the sole rail link to Balochistan and has been suspended repeatedly this year, most recently on 5 and 6 September for track maintenance. Confirm with the station on the day.
Is the train cheaper than the bus in Pakistan?
On long routes, yes, and by a wide margin. Karachi to Lahore in economy costs Rs 3,750 against roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 9,000 by coach, with an economy berth at Rs 3,850. On short intercity hops the bus is often quicker and the price difference is small, so the train’s advantage is clearest beyond about 500 kilometres.
What is the difference between AC Business and AC Sleeper?
AC Business is air-conditioned seating with wider reclining seats and, on some trains, meals. AC Sleeper is an air-conditioned berth for lying down on overnight runs. On Karachi to Lahore, AC Business costs Rs 10,950 to Rs 14,600 and AC Sleeper Rs 14,050 to Rs 14,850.
Are there student or child discounts?
Yes. Students with a valid institutional card get a concession on most classes, and children aged five to eleven travel at half fare. Senior citizens and people with disabilities are also eligible. Concessions are usually applied at the booking counter rather than in the app.
When will ML-1 make trains faster?
Not soon. The Karachi to Rohri first phase is financed at about $2.5 billion with the Asian Development Bank and civil work is targeted to begin in January 2027. China declined to fund the whole of ML-1, so the Rohri to Multan section is being offered to private investors while a feasibility study is carried out. Journey times on the main line will not change until the work is well advanced.
Why is my train several hours late?
More than two thirds of the network’s track is over-aged, and the same corridor carries freight. Winter fog in Punjab regularly adds three to six hours. Check a live tracking service or the Pakistan Railways helpline on 117 before leaving for the station rather than relying on the printed timetable.
