Peshawar to Northern Areas Bus Ticket Price, Timings and Online Booking
Peshawar is the cheapest way into Chitral, Dir and the Kumrat valley, and the natural base for upper Swat. It is also the wrong direction entirely for Gilgit-Baltistan, which is the single most useful thing to know before planning a northern trip from here.
The short version: from Peshawar you can reach Chitral, Dir, Timergara, Mingora and Saidu Sharif directly, and continue by local transport to Kalam, the Kumrat valley and the Kalash valleys. For Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu you should travel via Islamabad instead, because the Karakoram Highway services all start there.
What makes Peshawar different from the other hubs
Lahore and the twin cities both reach across the whole north. Peshawar does not. It owns the western half completely and has essentially nothing for the eastern half. Chitral, Dir and Kumrat are cheaper and easier from here than anywhere else in the country. Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu and the Kaghan valley are all better reached from Islamabad.
Where you can go without changing
Peshawar’s northern network runs up the western corridors: the Swat valley, the Dir road and the Lowari Tunnel into Chitral.

Chitral is cheaper and shorter from Peshawar
Hindukush Express charges Rs 2,700 from Peshawar against Rs 3,350 from Islamabad, and the journey is shorter. For anyone already in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, this is the obvious way in.

Peshawar to Chitral is Rs 2,700 and ten to twelve hours. Islamabad to Chitral is Rs 3,350 and twelve to fourteen. Same operator, same tunnel, same road beyond Dir.
Only if you are already here
Reaching Peshawar from Islamabad costs around Rs 1,000 and adds a change, which more than eats the saving. Coming from Punjab, book the Islamabad service direct.
Open year round since 2017
The Lowari Tunnel runs 10.4 km under the pass on the N-45. Before it opened, Chitral was cut off by road each winter and reachable only by air.
Onward to the Kalash valleys
Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir are reached by jeep from Chitral town, hired and negotiated rather than scheduled. There is no bus into the valleys at all, so plan a night in Chitral rather than arriving after ten hours and setting off again the same day.
Gilgit-Baltistan is the wrong way from Peshawar
This is where the Peshawar hub stops being useful, and it catches people out because the map makes it look closer than it is.
- The Karakoram Highway services all start in the twin cities. K2 Movers, Mashabrum Tours and NATCO board at Pirwadhai, not Peshawar.
- Reaching Gilgit from Peshawar means travelling to Islamabad first, around two and a half hours in the wrong direction, then boarding the northern service that evening.
- The Shandur road from Chitral to Gilgit exists but is a summer jeep route over a 3,700 metre pass, not a bus corridor. Treat it as an expedition rather than transport.
- Budget a full day for Peshawar to Gilgit: morning to Islamabad, evening departure north, arriving the following afternoon.
- For Skardu the same applies, with another six hours on top.
Plan the connection properly
Northern services leave Pirwadhai between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. A morning departure from Peshawar connects; an afternoon one does not. The western valleys are jeep country beyond the main towns. These are the destinations people search for from Peshawar and cannot book a bus to.

What to expect from the jeep legs
Jeeps leave when full rather than to a timetable, and fares are negotiated rather than published. Agree the price before getting in, confirm the destination clearly, and arrive at the road head with the day ahead of you. Reaching Dir or Chitral in the late afternoon generally means staying there rather than continuing.
Planning a northern trip from Peshawar
- Chitral and Dir services leave in the morning, not overnight, because the Lowari Tunnel access and the approach road both need daylight.
- Ask for Dir or Timergara specifically. They are different towns about an hour apart, and a Chitral through ticket costs roughly double a Dir one.
- No northern corridor from here has sleeper berths. Every journey is seated throughout.
- No Pakistani coach has an onboard washroom, and stops are further apart on the Dir and Chitral roads than on the motorway.
- Carry your CNIC and keep it accessible, since checks are more common on these routes.
- Winter affects Upper Dir and the Kumrat road well before it affects the tunnel itself.
- For Gilgit-Baltistan, travel to Islamabad first and take the evening departure from Pirwadhai.
