Islamabad to Northern Areas Bus Ticket Price, Timings and Online Booking
Islamabad and Rawalpindi are where northern Pakistan connects to the rest of the country, and for northern travel the two work as one hub. Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Naran, Kaghan, Kalam, Swat and Chilas all have direct services. The hard part is not finding a bus, it is knowing which of five terminals it leaves from, and most of them are in Rawalpindi rather than Islamabad.
The short version: from the twin cities you can board a direct bus to Murree, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Balakot, Kaghan, Naran, Mingora, Kalam, Muzaffarabad, Chilas, Ghizer, Gahkuch, Gilgit, Hunza and Skardu. Almost everything in northern Pakistan that has a bus at all has one from here. What still needs a jeep is the hill stations, the side valleys and the trekking access points.
Islamabad or Rawalpindi: one network, not two
For northern travel these are not separate origins. Pirwadhai, the main departure point for Gilgit-Baltistan, is in Rawalpindi, while Faizabad sits between the two cities and G-8 and G-9 are on the Islamabad side. Fares are quoted from either city interchangeably, so a Rawalpindi to Gilgit ticket and an Islamabad to Gilgit ticket are the same seat on the same bus.
Every northern destination you can reach without changing
Fares are the lowest published on each corridor. Journey times on the mountain routes are estimates rather than schedules, since the Karakoram Highway adds hours without warning.

Five terminals, and which one you need
Northern services do not all leave from one place. These are the five departure points across the twin cities and what runs from each.
Pirwadhai, Rawalpindi
The main northern hub. Mashabrum Tours, Crystal Lines and the Gilgit-Baltistan operators all board here, and Chitral services leave from here too. If you are going to Gilgit, Hunza or Skardu, this is almost certainly your terminal.

Faizabad
Convenient for both cities and served by the metro. Faisal Movers runs a terminal here, and the hourly Murree Hi-roof service departs from Faizabad at around Rs 700.
The easiest terminal to reach without a car.
Chungi 26, Peshawar Road
The Faisal Movers Islamabad terminal, with separate lounges and counters for economy, standard, executive and business class. Road Master also boards here.
Free shuttle connects it to the other terminals.
G-8 Markaz, Islamabad
Motorway Express runs from behind Waheed Chemist in G-8, serving Peshawar, Swat, Saidu Sharif and Abbottabad on luxury coasters.
Saves the trip out to Pirwadhai if you are in Islamabad proper.
G-9 Karachi Company
Hindukush Express runs its Chitral counter here on 0345-0170800. Niazi Express also boards at G-9 Markaz on Mangla Road.

Own operator terminals
Daewoo Express, Skyways and NATCO run their own terminals across the twin cities. NATCO is the one to find for the Gilgit and China corridor.

The rule of thumb
Gilgit-Baltistan means Pirwadhai. Murree means Faizabad. Peshawar and Swat can mean G-8 or Chungi 26. If you are in Islamabad rather than Rawalpindi, check whether your operator has an Islamabad side counter before committing to the trip out to Pirwadhai, because several now do.
Where the bus stops and the jeep begins
Even from the twin cities, a number of well known destinations have no scheduled service at all. These are the ones people search for and cannot book.

What to expect from the jeep legs
Jeeps and valley vans leave when full rather than to a timetable, and fares are negotiated rather than published. Agree the price before getting in, confirm the destination clearly, and build slack into any day that involves one. Arriving at a road head after dark generally means staying there.
Season and road closures
Some of these routes run all year and some do not exist for half of it. The distinction matters more than any fare comparison.
Naran, Kaghan, Babusar, Deosai
The Mansehra to Naran to Jalkhad road closes around November and is cleared through spring. Naran opens before the full link to Chilas. Babusar and Deosai open latest and close earliest.
Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu
Services run through winter on the Karakoram Highway, but snow and landslides bring long delays and occasional closures. Build spare days into any winter plan.
May to September
Everything is open and everything sells out. Book several days ahead, and remember that K2 Movers does not sell online at all.
The booking problem in peak season
Two of the three main Gilgit-Baltistan operators take bookings only by phone or at the counter. Mashabrum Tours is the one you can secure through Bookme, which on a July weekend is worth more than the Rs 240 it costs over NATCO. If you are planning a summer northern trip, sort the seat before the hotel.
Planning a northern trip from the twin cities
- Northern services leave between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM. If you are connecting from Lahore or Karachi, arrive in the twin cities that morning, not that evening.
- Check your terminal before travel day. Pirwadhai, Faizabad, Chungi 26, G-8 and G-9 are scattered across two cities.
- No sleeper berths exist on any northern corridor. Sixteen to twenty four hours to Gilgit or Skardu is seated throughout.
- No Pakistani coach has an onboard washroom. Scheduled stops are your only breaks, and they are further apart on the Karakoram Highway.
- Do not book a flight or fixed commitment for the morning after your scheduled arrival from the north.
- Carry your CNIC and keep it accessible, since checks are more common on northern routes.

If you are coming from further south
Travellers from Lahore, Multan or Karachi should treat the twin cities as a staging point rather than a place to pass through. A morning arrival connects with the evening northern departure; an evening arrival misses it by hours and costs you a night. How do I get to Fairy Meadows?
Take a Gilgit-bound service to Raikot Bridge, then a jeep up to Tato, then roughly a two hour walk. There is no bus for the final stages and the jeep track is one of the more demanding in the country.
Are there sleeper buses to Gilgit or Skardu?
No. No operator on any northern corridor offers berths, so sixteen to twenty four hours is seated throughout. K2 Movers fits wide recliner seats with personal USB charging, which is the most comfortable option available.
What time do northern buses depart?
