Why Peshawar wins on this one

On almost every northern route, Islamabad is the staging point because that is where the buses start. Chitral is the exception. Hindukush Express charges Rs 2,700 from Peshawar and Rs 3,350 from Islamabad, and the Karachi to Peshawar leg is Rs 300 cheaper than Karachi to Islamabad. The two differences compound into roughly Rs 950.

What changed in 2017

Chitral is reachable by road year round now

Until 2017 the road crossed the Lowari Pass at over 3,000 metres and closed under snow for much of the year. The tunnel changed the corridor completely.

THE TUNNEL

10.4 km under the pass

Two tunnels on the N-45 between Dir and Chitral, operated by the National Highway Authority. Scheduled buses now run through the winter.

DAYTIME DEPARTURES

Unusual for a long route

Hindukush Express runs 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM rather than overnight, because of tunnel access and the Dir side approach needing daylight.

THE KALASH VALLEYS

Jeep from Chitral

Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir are hired jeep only. Plan a night in Chitral rather than continuing after a two stage journey from Karachi.

The daytime schedule changes your connection

Most northern connections work because both legs run overnight. This one does not. Hindukush Express departs between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM, so you need a morning arrival in Peshawar to catch the same day service, otherwise you are staying the night regardless of how early you left Karachi.
