Islamabad to Astore Bus Ticket Price, Online Booking, Timing
The Islamabad to Astore ticket price runs from about Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 in total, and almost nobody makes the trip on a single ticket. The journey covers around 600 km up the Karakoram Highway and takes sixteen to eighteen hours, with a change at Jaglot or Gilgit.
Short answer: plan on Rs 3,500 to Rs 4,500 in total and two legs. There is no dependable year-round direct coach from the capital to Astore. The standard trip is a NATCO or Mashabrum Tours service to Gilgit or the Jaglot turnoff, then a local jeep or Hiace up the Astore valley.
Islamabad to Astore ticket price by leg
Astore is off the Karakoram Highway rather than on it, which is the whole reason this route needs two tickets rather than one.
| Bus operator | Class | Route | Journey time | Ticket price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NATCO | Leg one, standard seated, air conditioned | Rawalpindi to Gilgit via Chilas | 14h | Rs 2,800 |
| Mashabrum Tours | Leg one, luxury, air conditioned | Islamabad to Gilgit via Chilas | 14h | Rs 3,600 |
| Local Hiace or jeep | Leg two, shared vehicle, not air conditioned | Jaglot or Gilgit to Astore | 2h 30m to 4h | Rs 700 to Rs 900 |
| Seasonal direct coach | Standard seated, summer only | Rawalpindi to Astore, when running | 17h | Rs 3,500 |
Fares are indicative published prices and vary with class, season, fuel adjustments and demand. Local jeep and Hiace fares on the Astore leg are agreed at the stand rather than published, and rise in peak season.
Jaglot or Gilgit, and why the shorter change is not always better
The Astore road leaves the Karakoram Highway at Jaglot, well before Gilgit, so changing there looks like the obvious move on a map. In practice Gilgit has far more onward vehicles and a proper stand, while at Jaglot you are waiting at a junction for something to fill. If you arrive at Jaglot early in the day the shortcut works. If you arrive tired at an awkward hour, carry on to Gilgit and come back.

How to actually get from Islamabad to Astore
Three workable plans, and the right one depends mostly on the month you are travelling.
NATCO to Gilgit, then local
The state operator on the Karakoram Highway, with the best terminal network in Gilgit-Baltistan and a fare floor nothing else matches.
About Rs 3,500 total
Mashabrum Tours to Gilgit, then local
A luxury seat for the fourteen hour leg, which on this road is the part of the trip actually worth spending money on.
About Rs 4,500 total
Seasonal direct coach
Summer only and not on every day. One ticket and no change, but do not build a winter trip around it.
About Rs 3,500
Our verdict
Book Mashabrum Tours to Gilgit and sort the Astore leg on arrival. Fourteen hours up the Karakoram Highway is where comfort earns its money, and the two or three hours into the valley are cheap and frequent enough that planning them in advance gains you nothing. Treat a direct coach as a bonus if one happens to be running on your date.

Terminals and the change point
The northern operators run their own Rawalpindi terminals rather than working out of Pirwadhai.
Rawalpindi
- NATCO
- Its own Rawalpindi terminal, on the Gilgit-Baltistan network.
- Mashabrum Tours and K2 Movers
- Separate terminals on the same northern corridor.
- Worth knowing
- Evening departures, so allow for traffic getting across the twin cities.
Jaglot, Gilgit and Astore
- Jaglot
- The turnoff for the Astore road, a junction rather than a proper stand.
- Gilgit
- The reliable change point, with frequent Astore vehicles from the main stand.
- Astore
- Onward local transport runs to Eidgah, Gorikot, Rama and the Rattu valley.
The road to Astore
The full Karakoram Highway run north, then a climb east into the Astore valley below Nanga Parbat.
- Islamabad and Rawalpindi Evening departures from the northern operators’ terminals.
- Hazara Motorway to Mansehra and Thakot The fast opening section, done before midnight.
- Besham and Chilas The overnight Karakoram Highway stretch, with the usual rest stops.
- Jaglot Where the Astore road branches east, reached in the morning.
- Astore Two and a half to four hours up the valley from the turnoff.
The first leg is the same road as Islamabad to Gilgit and Islamabad to Chilas, so those pages cover it in more detail.
Season and road conditions
Astore is reachable year round, but the valley road and the Deosai crossing are two very different propositions.
By season
- May to October
- The straightforward window, with frequent valley transport and any seasonal direct coach running.
- November to April
- Still reachable, but valley vehicles thin out and snow can close sections at short notice.
- Deosai to Skardu
- The Astore to Skardu crossing over Deosai is a summer route only, roughly July to September.
Practical notes
- Landslides
- The Karakoram Highway can close after heavy rain, which adds hours to leg one.
- Cash
- The valley leg is paid at the stand, so carry cash from Gilgit.
- Nearby
- Rama Meadows, Gorikot and the Rattu valley are all short local hops from Astore.
Islamabad to Astore FAQs
Is there a direct bus from Islamabad to Astore?
Not dependably. A seasonal direct coach runs in summer on some days, but the standard trip is a Gilgit service followed by a local jeep or Hiace from Jaglot or Gilgit.
What does the whole journey cost?
About Rs 3,500 in total on NATCO plus a local vehicle, or around Rs 4,500 with a Mashabrum Tours luxury seat for the long first leg.
How long does it take?
Sixteen to eighteen hours including the change. Leg one is about fourteen hours to Gilgit, and the valley leg is two and a half to four hours depending on where you change and road conditions.
Should I change at Jaglot or Gilgit?

Over the Deosai plains, in summer only, roughly July to September. At other times the route to Skardu is back down to the Karakoram Highway and along the Indus.
