Say Chilas clearly when you book

Because these are Gilgit services, Chilas is a set-down partway rather than a terminus. Name it at the counter and confirm the coach stops, in the same way you would for any mid-route town.

Severe summer heat

Chilas sits low in the Indus gorge and is one of the hottest places on the Karakoram Highway in summer, which surprises people expecting mountain conditions at this altitude.

A seasonal alternative

The Babusar Pass cuts the journey in half

For a few months a year Chilas can be reached over the pass from Naran, which is far shorter than going round by the Karakoram Highway.

THE KKH WAY

Year round

Via Pirwadhai and the Karakoram Highway, sixteen to eighteen hours and always available.

VIA BABUSAR

High summer only

Through Naran and over the pass, on arranged transport rather than a scheduled coach.

THE CATCH

It opens late

Naran usually opens well before the Babusar link does, so an open valley says nothing about the pass.

Do not plan around the pass

Treat Babusar as a bonus if it happens to be open when you travel, not as the route you book. It carries no scheduled service, opens for a short and unpredictable window, and closes at short notice. Plan the Pirwadhai journey, and if you find yourself in Naran in August with the pass open, take it then.

Choosing how to travel

What we would book for Peshawar to Chilas

A mid-route set-down, so confirming the stop matters more than the class.

BEST VALUE

NATCO

Rs 3,000 on the second leg, the cheapest fare on the Karakoram Highway.

BEST TO SECURE

Mashabrum Tours

Rs 3,200 and bookable through Bookme rather than by phone.

BEST TIMING

K2 Movers

Rs 3,600 with the earliest Pirwadhai departure at 5 PM.

The honest recommendation

Book Mashabrum Tours at about Rs 3,200 through Bookme and confirm the Chilas set-down when you reserve. The Rs 200 over NATCO buys a seat you can secure from Peshawar, and on a service that is really going to Gilgit the thing worth getting right is that the coach stops for you at all.
