Fares on the scale in force since 9 March 2026. The railcar services share an identical fare table.

Four railcars, one fare, four departure times

Rawal Express, Subak Raftar, Subak Kharram and Islamabad Express charge exactly the same in every class. That is unusual on Pakistan Railways and it simplifies the decision entirely: pick whichever leaves closest to when you want to travel. Subak Raftar received an upgraded rake in late 2025, so it has the newest interior of the four, but the fare is identical.

Why the through expresses cost more

Khyber Mail, Tezgam, Jaffar Express and Green Line are long-distance trains that happen to pass through. Their fares reflect the full journey’s pricing tier rather than this 290 kilometre sector, which is why Green Line charges more than double the railcar fare for the same stretch of line. Their advantage is the overnight timing and, on Khyber Mail and Tezgam, an actual sleeper berth at Rs 3,050 and Rs 4,500.

A faster service, eventually

In April 2026 the Punjab government and the Ministry of Railways signed an agreement to bring modern DMU trainsets to eight regional routes covering about 1,415 kilometres, with the headline promise of a Lahore to Rawalpindi run in two and a half hours. That would roughly halve the current journey. Until the stock is in service, treat it as announced rather than running.

For a daytime journey, take whichever railcar leaves when you want at Rs 1,100. There is no reason to pay more unless you need the timing of a through express. For an overnight trip, Khyber Mail’s AC Sleeper at Rs 3,050 is the standout: Rs 1,450 cheaper than the same class on Tezgam for the identical sector.

Winter

Fog between Lahore and Jhelum hits this corridor hard from December.

Through expresses on this sector are running the tail end of a journey that started in Karachi, so they inherit whatever delay accumulated further south. The railcars start at Lahore Junction, which is why they keep time better. If the arrival hour matters, that difference is worth more than the fare gap.

Getting to Islamabad

Two trains run beyond Rawalpindi to Islamabad Margalla on the western edge of the capital: Green Line and the Islamabad Express railcar, which charges the Rs 1,100 railcar fare. Everything else terminates at Rawalpindi, which for most Islamabad destinations is the more practical arrival point anyway once you factor in the taxi.

Rarely the right answer here.

This is the corridor where the motorway coach genuinely competes with the train, and usually wins on convenience. The rail case rests on two things: Rs 1,100 against Rs 2,000 or more for the coach, and the ability to sleep on Khyber Mail’s berth rather than arriving at dawn having sat upright. If the promised two and a half hour DMU service materialises, the balance shifts decisively back to rail.
