Why the fare is so low
Rs 2,650 for around 850 kilometres is cheaper per kilometre than any other long route in the country, and far below the Rs 4,200 that Karachi to Rawalpindi costs over a longer distance. Part of that is the line’s history as a lifeline service rather than a commercial one. It is also why the suspension bites: for many passengers on this corridor there is no comparably priced alternative at all.
What replaced it
Nothing directly. Coaches run Karachi to Quetta on the N-25 and are now carrying most of the traffic, at several times the rail fare. Flights between Karachi and Quetta continue, with fares from around Rs 17,000 one way, and they have tended to rise whenever the train is off.

One of the great railway climbs
The Bolan Pass section, built in the nineteenth century, lifts the line from the Sindh plain to the Balochistan plateau through tunnels and tight gradients. It is the reason the journey takes so long for the distance covered, and the reason the route is so exposed: a single damaged section closes the only rail link to the province. The Sibi to Harnai branch nearby reopened in October 2023 after seventeen years closed, which gives some sense of the timescales involved when a Balochistan line goes down.
