Only one train in each class

This route has an unusually clean structure. If you want the cheapest economy seat, it is Khushhal Khan Khattak Express at Rs 4,200, and that train sells nothing else. If you want AC Standard, there is exactly one option: Awam Express at Rs 11,550. If you want AC Business, it is Rehman Baba Express at Rs 13,200 or Khyber Mail at Rs 13,300. The choice of class effectively chooses the train for you.

Khyber Mail is the route’s own train

Khyber Mail has run Karachi to Peshawar since long before most of the network’s current services existed, and it carries its history in its stopping pattern. It is not the fastest, but it is the one that calls everywhere that matters along Main Line 1, and it sells the widest spread of classes on intermediate sectors: Rs 3,750 to Lahore, Rs 4,200 to Rawalpindi and Rs 4,900 through to Peshawar in economy.

Breaking the journey at Rawalpindi

A day and a half is a long time on a train. Because the economy fare to Rawalpindi is Rs 4,200 and through to Peshawar only Rs 4,900, the last 170 kilometres cost very little, but they also add several hours. ML-1 is being rebuilt, slowly

This is the line the ML-1 upgrade is meant to transform. The first phase, Karachi to Rohri, is financed at about $2.5 billion with the Asian Development Bank and civil work is targeted to begin in January 2027. China declined to fund the whole project, so the Rohri to Multan section is being offered to private investors. Nothing about the journey time on this route changes until that work is well advanced.
