The price of lying flat

On Lahore to Karachi, a Daewoo sleeper costs roughly Rs 1,500 more than a Daewoo luxury seat, and a Faisal Movers sleeper about Rs 2,000 more than its super executive seat. Spread over a whole night, that is the cost of arriving able to work rather than stiff from sixteen hours upright.

From the twin cities the four sleeper options sit close together, between about Rs 12,000 and Rs 12,430. Choose by departure time and boarding point rather than by the few hundred rupees between them. The cheapest sleepers in the country are the Karachi to Quetta double deckers and Faisal Movers’ shorter run from Sadiqabad.

Where sleepers go

Sleeper bus destinations in Pakistan

Sleeper coaches run only where a journey is long enough to sleep through. Almost every route ends in Karachi, with Quetta as the one exception.

Sleeper berths are usually sold end to end. If you want to get off at Sukkur, Moro or Hyderabad, ask when you book; some operators sell berths to these stops, others keep them for Karachi passengers.

Karachi to Quetta: a different kind of sleeper

The Balochistan sleepers are double deck coaches with 21 to 30 berths: two person berths on either side of the lower deck and single berths above. They cost far less than the Punjab to Karachi sleepers because the trip is about ten hours rather than twenty, and most leave Karachi in the evening from the Hub River Road side of the city. If you are heading on to the hills, see our Karachi to Ziarat guide.

No toilets on board

No sleeper bus in Pakistan has a washroom. Coaches stop for meals and prayers every few hours instead. The only intercity coach with an on board toilet is Q Connect, and it runs Lahore to Islamabad with seats, not berths.

Before you book

Is a sleeper bus worth it?

For a four hour trip, no. For a sixteen hour overnight run, it is the single biggest comfort upgrade on Pakistan’s roads.

What you get

Berth
A flat bed instead of a reclining seat, with a curtain for privacy.
On board
Air conditioning, blanket and pillow, charging and reading lights on most coaches.
Layouts
Daewoo mixes single and double beds in a 2+1 layout; Karachi to Quetta coaches use two decks.

Single or double berth

Single
The only private option for a solo traveller. Book it first.
Double
Suits couples and a parent with a child. Travelling alone, ask how the operator allocates double berths before you book.
Lower or upper
Lower berths are steadier and easier to reach at night.

Who should book

Worth it
Families, older travellers, and anyone who must work the day they arrive.
Less needed
Budget travellers who sleep easily upright, or anyone on a daytime departure.
Alternative
A 2+1 executive or Gold Class seat for less.

How to decide

If your journey is overnight and longer than twelve hours, the berth is worth the extra Rs 1,500 to Rs 3,000. For anything shorter, a 2+1 seat gives most of the comfort for less money.

Departures

Sleeper bus departure times

Sleepers leave in the afternoon and evening so the long central section runs overnight. These are published patterns; confirm on the day.

Daewoo, Lahore to Karachi

4:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Departures have been scheduled at 4, 6, 8, 9 and 11 PM, arriving the next morning to afternoon.

Daewoo, Islamabad to Karachi

3:30 PM to 10:30 PM

Departures have been scheduled at 3:30, 5:30, 7:30 and 10:30 PM.

Kainat, Rawalpindi to Karachi

Morning to late night

Kainat’s Karachi line has run from about 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM; ask which departures carry sleeper coaches.

Karachi to Quetta

Evening

Most sleepers leave Karachi in the evening and reach Quetta around dawn.

Pick your arrival time, not your departure

All the Punjab to Karachi sleepers arrive sixteen to twenty hours after leaving, and the Super Highway into Karachi jams in the evening rush. An afternoon departure from Lahore or the twin cities usually lands you in Karachi in the morning or around midday, which is easier for whoever is meeting you.

Where to board

Sleeper bus boarding points

Sleepers leave from each operator’s own terminal, not from general bus stands. Check the terminal named on your ticket.
