Mingora and Saidu Sharif are adjacent

The two run into each other, with Saidu Sharif about fifteen minutes beyond Mingora and priced Rs 100 higher. Most services name one or the other, so check which your ticket says rather than assuming they are interchangeable.

No berths on this corridor

Nothing in the valley offers a sleeper class, which is not a limitation over three and a half hours. It matters more if you are continuing to Kalam.

What you are actually booking

Swat is a valley, and the places in it are hours apart

A ticket to Swat means Mingora in practice. The destinations people associate with the name are further up, and each needs its own arrangement.

MINGORA

The valley hub

Where the coaches terminate and where onward transport for everywhere else is arranged.

MALAM JABBA

Ninety minutes up

By van or taxi from Mingora. There is no bus to the resort.

KALAM

Three hours further

Up the valley road, and better booked directly from Peshawar.

Name the place, not the valley

If Malam Jabba or Kalam is where you are going, book that rather than a ticket to Swat. Arriving at Mingora is arriving at the bottom of a long valley, and the onward legs are either negotiated locally or run on their own morning schedules. Booking to Swat and improvising from there costs you a half day you did not plan for.

Departure schedule

Peshawar to Swat bus timings and departure frequency

Frequent through the day, unlike the Dir and Chitral corridor next door.

All day

Very frequent

Local coaches and valley operators run constantly on this stretch.

Early morning

Best

Needed if you are continuing to Malam Jabba or Kalam the same day.

Summer weekends

Busy

The valley fills. Book ahead in season rather than turning up.

Booking

Rarely needed

Outside peak weekends this is a turn up and go corridor.

Choosing an operator

Which is the best bus service from Peshawar to Swat?

Three and a half hours with a wide fare spread and little difference in arrival.

BEST VALUE

Swat Express

Rs 900 and frequent, arriving at the same time as everything else.

BEST OVERALL

Swat Coach

Economy at Rs 950 from the operator whose network the valley is, with counters at Mingora.

BEST FOR SAIDU SHARIF

Motorway Express

Business at Rs 1,000, running fifteen minutes further into Saidu Sharif itself.

The honest recommendation

Take Swat Coach at about Rs 950. It costs Rs 50 over Swat Express and gives you an operator with staff in the valley, which is worth having if you are arranging anything onward. Faisal Movers at Rs 1,600 is Rs 650 more for the same arrival time, which only makes sense if you need the luggage allowance.

Where to board

Peshawar and Mingora terminals

The valley operators run their own terminals at both ends.

PESHAWAR

General stands and operator terminals

Swat Coach and Motorway Express board at their own terminals, and local coaches run constantly from the general stands at Hayatabad and Khyber Bazaar. Faisal Movers uses Al-Madina Coach Terminal on GT Road near Haji Camp, on 0311-1224488.

Check whether your ticket names Mingora or Saidu Sharif.

MINGORA

The valley hub

Vans and taxis for Malam Jabba and coaches for Kalam and the upper valley are arranged at Mingora. Saidu Sharif is about fifteen minutes further on.

Onward transport up the valley leaves in the morning.
