A transfer point rather than a destination

Very few people travel from the twin cities to Mansehra for its own sake. They are going to Kaghan, Naran, Balakot or Shogran, and Mansehra is where the motorway ends and the valley transport begins. That shapes what you should book: the cheapest seat that gets you there early, because the hard part of the day comes after you get off.

The junction

Mansehra is where the north splits in two

Two very different journeys begin at Mansehra, and which one you are taking determines everything about how you should plan the day.

NORTH EAST

The Kaghan valley

Balakot, Shogran, Kaghan, Naran and Babusar. Vans and jeeps from outside the terminal, seasonal, and closed for much of the winter.

NORTH

The Karakoram Highway

Besham, Chilas, Gilgit and beyond. The through buses pass Mansehra rather than terminating, so book from the twin cities rather than trying to join here.

LOCAL

Hazara towns

Oghi, Battagram and the surrounding district, served by local transport from the Mansehra stand.

Do not plan to join a Gilgit bus at Mansehra

The Karakoram Highway services leave the twin cities in the early evening and pass Mansehra already loaded. If you are heading to Gilgit, Hunza or Skardu, book the through service from Pirwadhai rather than assuming you can pick one up here. Mansehra works as a transfer point for the Kaghan valley, not for the KKH.

Essential if you are continuing to Naran or Shogran the same day.

Through the day

Frequent

Coasters leave when full. No real need to book for Mansehra itself.

Evening

Until around 8:00 PM

Fine for Mansehra, too late for onward valley transport.

Winter

Valley closed

Buses to Mansehra run year round, but the road above Balakot does not.

Where to board

Twin cities and Mansehra terminals

TWIN CITIES

Pirwadhai and Faizabad

Most Hazara services run from Pirwadhai in Rawalpindi. Faisal Movers also boards at Faizabad, which is easier to reach from Islamabad and served by the metro.

Motorway Express runs Abbottabad from G-8 Markaz if that suits better.

MANSEHRA

Main bus stand

Services set down at the main terminal, which is also where vans and coasters for Balakot, Kaghan and Naran depart from.

Valley transport leaves when full and fares are negotiated.

Common questions

Islamabad to Mansehra bus FAQs

What is the Islamabad to Mansehra bus ticket price?

From about Rs 700 on local coasters, Rs 850 with Hazara Movers economy, Rs 1,000 with Faisal Movers and Rs 1,400 for Hazara Movers Luxury.

How long is the Islamabad to Mansehra journey?

Around two and a half hours for roughly 120 km on the Hazara Motorway. It is short enough to be a morning trip rather than a day’s travel.

Can I get to Naran from Mansehra the same day?

Yes with an early start. Vans and shared jeeps take three to four hours up the valley and leave when full. Arrive in Mansehra by late morning and you have the day; arrive in the evening and you will be staying there.

Can I join a Gilgit bus at Mansehra?

Not reliably. The Karakoram Highway services leave the twin cities in the early evening and pass Mansehra already loaded. Book the through service from Pirwadhai instead.

Is Mansehra worth visiting on its own?

For most travellers it is a transfer point rather than a destination. It is the junction where the Kaghan valley road and the Karakoram Highway diverge, which is why almost everyone passing through is on their way somewhere else.
