Lahore to the Northern Areas Bus Ticket Price, Timings and Online Booking
Most northern destinations have no direct bus from Lahore. Hunza, Skardu, Naran, Nathia Gali, Kalam and the Neelum valley are all reached by changing at a hub and often finishing by jeep. This guide maps every destination to how you genuinely get there, and which fares to expect on each leg.
The short version: from Lahore you can board a direct bus to Islamabad, Murree, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Balakot, Mingora and Muzaffarabad. Everything further north or deeper into the valleys requires a change, usually at Rawalpindi, Mansehra, Mingora or Muzaffarabad, and the last stretch to places like Fairy Meadows, Ratti Gali or Deosai is by jeep or on foot.
Why this matters before you book
Several booking sites will sell you a “Lahore to Naran” or “Lahore to Hunza” ticket. These are connecting tickets covering two or more legs, not a single through coach, and the final stretch may not be included at all. Knowing which is which prevents you from arriving at a terminal expecting a bus that was never going to be there.

Fares are indicative published prices and vary with class, operator, fuel adjustments and season. Several of these routes carry heavier traffic and higher fares in the summer tourist season. Confirm the live fare at booking.
The one that looks direct but is not
Faisal Movers advertises Lahore to Naran at around Rs 4,000. That is a connecting ticket routed through Islamabad, not a single coach from Lahore. The service itself runs Islamabad to Naran at around Rs 3,400 via Abbottabad, Mansehra and Balakot. Buying the connecting ticket is perfectly reasonable and often convenient, but plan for a change rather than a through journey.
Four hubs, and which one you need
Almost every northern journey from Lahore passes through one of four places. Working out which is yours is the single most useful planning step.
Rawalpindi
For Gilgit-Baltistan: Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu, Chilas, Ghizer. All the Karakoram Highway services start here, not in Lahore.
Mansehra
For the Kaghan valley: Balakot, Shogran, Kaghan, Naran, Babusar. Vans and jeeps run from outside the bus terminal.
Mingora
For upper Swat: Kalam, Malam Jabba, Bahrain, Madyan. Local transport from the Mingora stand.
Muzaffarabad
For the Neelum valley: Keran, Sharda, Kel, Ratti Gali. Jeeps and vans only beyond Muzaffarabad.
The Rawalpindi rule for Gilgit-Baltistan
There is no through bus from Lahore to Hunza, Skardu, Gilgit or anywhere on the Karakoram Highway. You travel Lahore to Rawalpindi, then board a northern service at Pirwadhai. K2 Movers, Mashabrum Tours and NATCO all depart from the twin cities. Budget a night in Rawalpindi or take a morning Lahore service to connect with the evening northern departure.

Season and road closures
Several of these destinations are simply unreachable for part of the year, and no operator will tell you that when you are browsing fares in January.
Naran, Babusar, Deosai
The Mansehra to Naran to Jalkhad road closes for winter, typically from November, and is cleared through spring for the summer season. Babusar and Deosai open later still.
May to September
When the roads are open and the services run at their fullest. Also when they sell out, so book several days ahead on the northern corridors.
Gilgit, Hunza, Skardu
Services run through winter, though the Karakoram Highway is subject to snow and landslide delays. Build spare days into any winter plan.
Check the road before you book the bus
The Kaghan valley road in particular is cleared over several weeks each spring, and the full link through to Chilas opens later than Naran itself. A ticket is no use if the road is still under snow, so confirm the current status before committing to travel dates in April, May or October.
Planning a northern trip from Lahore
- Work backwards from your final destination to find your hub, then book the Lahore leg to match the hub departure.
- Northern services from Rawalpindi leave in the early evening, so a morning departure from Lahore connects well. An evening Lahore departure does not.
- Jeep fares are negotiated, not published. Agree the price before getting in, and confirm the destination clearly.
- Jeeps leave when full rather than to a timetable, so build slack into any day involving one.
- No sleeper berths exist on any northern corridor, so long journeys are seated throughout.
- Two of the three Gilgit operators do not sell online, which matters in peak season. Mashabrum Tours sells through Bookme.
- Carry your CNIC and keep it accessible, since checks are more common on northern routes.
The most common planning mistake
Booking a late Lahore departure and expecting to connect at Rawalpindi the same night. The northern buses leave Pirwadhai between 5:00 PM and 9:00 PM, so an evening arrival from Lahore misses them by hours. Either take a morning service from Lahore, or plan a night in Rawalpindi and travel north the following evening.
