Priced as one product, not sector by sector
Green Line’s fares are set for a premium end-to-end journey, which is why its short-sector prices look so steep. Rs 1,800 for Karachi to Hyderabad is nearly five times the Rs 370 local fare on the same 165 kilometres. On the full run the premium is more defensible: Rs 6,350 against Rs 4,200 to Rawalpindi buys you eight or nine fewer hours and a far better train.
No AC Sleeper, but a parlour car
Green Line is the only train from Karachi to Rawalpindi selling a parlour car, with individual seating pods, at Rs 13,200 to Lahore and Rs 13,800 to Rawalpindi. It does not sell an AC Sleeper. That is the one gap in its range: if you want a berth for the Karachi to Rawalpindi run, Khyber Mail at Rs 16,550 or Tezgam at Rs 17,500 are the only options, and the parlour car is a seat, not a bed.

Green Line route and stops
Eight scheduled stops across 1,518 kilometres, which is what makes it the quickest train on the main line.
- Karachi CanttSouthern terminus. 5UP departs here.
- Hyderabad JunctionRs 1,800 in economy as a standalone ticket.
- Rohri JunctionWhere the Quetta line leaves the main line.
- Bahawalpur and KhanewalSouthern Punjab overnight.
- Lahore JunctionRs 5,600 from Karachi in economy.
- RawalpindiRs 6,350 from Karachi in economy.
- Islamabad MargallaNorthern terminus. The only train from Karachi that goes this far.
The only through train from Karachi to Islamabad
Every other long-distance service from Karachi terminates at Rawalpindi; the only other train using Margalla is the short Islamabad Express railcar to Lahore. Green Line continues to Islamabad Margalla on the western edge of the capital, which is the single operational advantage nothing else can match. For most Islamabad addresses, though, Rawalpindi plus a taxi is quicker than waiting for the one service that runs to Margalla.
Speed comes from the stopping pattern
At a maximum of 105 km/h and an average of about 72 km/h, Green Line is not mechanically faster than the trains it overtakes. It simply stops at eight stations where Fareed Express stops at 46. That is the whole explanation for the nine-hour difference to Lahore, and it is what the fare premium actually buys.
Is Green Line worth the extra?
In its favour
- Shortest journey time on the main line, by up to nine hours.
- Newest rake, with catering and entertainment.
- The only through service to Islamabad Margalla.
- A parlour car, which no other train from Karachi to Rawalpindi offers.
- Better punctuality than the older expresses.
Against it
- Dearest fare in every class on every sector it works.
- No AC Sleeper, so no berth above economy.
- Poor value on short sectors like Karachi to Hyderabad.
- One service a day, so no flexibility on timing.
- No AC Standard on the Karachi to Lahore sector.
Our take
Worth it on the full Karachi to Rawalpindi run, hard to justify on anything shorter. Rs 2,150 extra to save eight or nine hours on a 30-hour journey is a reasonable trade. Rs 1,430 extra for a two-hour hop to Hyderabad is not. If you want to lie down rather than recline, Khyber Mail’s AC Sleeper at Rs 16,550 does something Green Line cannot at any price.
